H. Pius X Church Eindhoven – Catholic church in Stratum

H. Pius X Church is located on Kardinaal de Jongweg, on the outskirts of the Stratum district, in the neighborhood across from the DAF factory. It is the smallest of our church locations, and that sets the tone: a cozy, welcoming space where everyone knows one another. The parish center is attached to the church.

The history of this site dates back to the 1950s, when the new Burghplan neighborhood was built. The first parishioners worshiped there in a temporary wooden church. In 1960, it was replaced by a large, modernist church building designed by architect Theo Boosten. The open tower, constructed with a concrete skeleton, was particularly striking; the nave was a single large space under a substantial gable roof, in which the concrete structure remained visible throughout.

That building did not last even forty years. In the 1960s, the roof was damaged by fire and storms. In the early 1980s, a smaller hall was built into the spacious choir because the large church was no longer needed for Sunday services. It was demolished in 1992. The site of the old church is now home to apartments with shops on the ground floor.

That same year, the current, smaller Pius X Church opened its doors on Kardinaal de Jongweg, designed by Eindhoven architect G. Peeren. Inside stands a large statue of Saint Pius X, the pope after whom the church is named. As of January 1, 2002, the church became an auxiliary church within the former Stratum parish; since the merger, it has belonged to the St. George parish.
