St. George’s Church – Stratum

St. George’s Church on Sint Jorislaan is the heart of our parish and the tallest church in Eindhoven. The neo-Gothic cruciform basilica was built according to a design by the Tilburg architect Hendrik Jacobus van Tulder and consecrated on September 21, 1885. It became this architect’s largest and final work. The striking west tower was not added until 1911, based on plans by Van Tulder’s student Jacobus van Gils, and stands over 87 meters tall.

The history of this religious community stretches back much further. As early as around 1400, there was a St. Joris Chapel in Stratum; on March 10, 1489, it was elevated to the status of an independent parish church. The church thus became the mother church of several parishes in the surrounding area. More than five centuries later, the Eucharist is still celebrated daily at the same site.

Upon entering, one is struck by how well-preserved the interior has remained: an octagonal crossing with double corner pillars and star vaults instead of the usual cross vaults, and a 1932 organ that incorporates parts of its predecessor from 1913. Since February 1976, St. George’s Church has been a national monument, and the restoration completed in 2006 ensures that the building will remain in good condition for many years to come. On the square in front of the church stands the 1919 Stratum Annexation Monument.

The church is located in the Stratum district, within walking distance of the Parktheater, and is open to everyone—whether to pray, light a candle, or simply to pause for a moment in this special space.

The pastoral center is open Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. and handles all requests for the parish. It serves as the central gathering place for our six church locations; courses and study groups are also held here. Open office hours with Father Wilmink: Tuesdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 a.m.
